Dreamweaver CS3 won't start or crashes at startup - msvcr80.dll error (Resolved)
I've been using Dreamweaver for many years now and it's always been my favourite web development application, never have I felt the need to change over to one of the many other WYSIWYG editors out there. I believe this is due in part to the fact I have never had a problem using it... until today.
I'd been working on a website the previous day and I thought I'd put a bit of work in before the football started. I double clicked my Dreamweaver icon as usual and saw the splash screen load up, but then usually where it would disappear to show the Dreamweaver program, I get nothing. I tried it again but this time I get a dialogue box telling me an error had occurred, looking at the error in more detail I see the following message.
ERROR SIGNATURE:
AppName: dreamweaver.exe AppVer: 9.0.0.3481 ModName: msvcr80.dll
After goggling around a bit there were a few different causes and resolutions to this type of error but in my case I discovered a crazy kind of bug. It appears that if at some point you created a file that is exactly 8.00KB (8.192 bytes) big in Dreamweaver CS3 then it causes the program to crash on start-up, I believe it has a problem when initiating the cache phase of loading the application. Simply removing this file from your local folder or opening it in notepad and filling it with random garbage just to get the file size up will solve the problem.
Crazy huh!
